Mythology describes a coherent set of myths and events representing a particular religion or value system. The term has its origins in Ancient Greek, emerging from the fusion of two greek words: mythos (meaning "story" or "legend") and logos (meaning "word").

In general, myths are traditional narrative literary works that explain various phenomena of nature, the origin of man and animals, etc. Thus, myths imply the presence of a sacred element, deities, or some fabulous, superhuman forces.

Myths often overlap with legends, the difference being that legends hold some truth, while myths are entirely imaginary.

Generally, mythology includes the totality of myths imagined by culture or religion (think about the Greek, Egyptian, or Norse mythologies) or the science concerned with reconstructing, studying, and interpreting myths.

Every society has its mythology, although there are many common elements between the great mythologies (Greek, Etruscan, Egyptian, Norse, Thraco-Dacian, Persian, Celtic, Roman, Sumerian, Hindu, Tibetan, etc.).

As a concept, mythologies are general systems developed from the stage of primitive culture to provide explanations for specific events or natural phenomena.

The emergence of early technical civilization and its forms of theoretical thought contributed significantly to the disappearance of myths and their absorption and integration into religion.

However, most of the primitive, archaic, or ancient mythologies, which included the conceptions of the formative period of the myths, came to be known even today due to technology giving the new generations easier access to old myths and legends.

Great works such as Homer's Epic, Hesiod's Theogony, Avesta, Mahābhārata, Kojiki, the Bible, Popol Vuh, Liu An's Huainan Zi, Kalevala, Old Edda, Veda, and Upanishad Cycle are now more accessible than ever.
