Lights, Camera, Bankrupt: 17 Most Expensive Movies Ever Made

The use of cutting-edge technology, revolutionary visual effects, and star-studded casts has created some of the most iconic and highest-grossing films of all time.

The budgets of the most expensive movies ever made reach hundreds of millions.

From Johnny Depp’s $55 million salary for his role in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” to the $40 million spent just for special effects (like computer-generated water) in Titanic, the costs of blockbuster films can skyrocket.

Nevertheless, investments in such films are usually highly profitable, with blockbusters earning billions at the box office.

I’ve compiled a list of the most expensive movies ever made, with budgets adjusted for inflation using the United States Consumer Price Index, taking into account the year of the movie’s release.

Just a small side note: two productions commonly mentioned in such lists are “War and Peace” and “Metropolis.”

Despite Soviet estimates indicating a budget of $100 million (around $700 million today), official documents show a much lower budget of between $8 and $9 million (around $60 to $70 million today, according to the German Consumer Price Index) for “War and Peace.”

Similarly, Metropolis production costs were between $1.2 and $1.3 million in 1927, or roughly $25 million today (adjusted for inflation, according to the German Consumer Price Index), not $200 million as often erroneously reported.

Now it’s time to look at some of the most expensive movies ever made.

17) Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Budget: $259 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $296 million

Box office: $2,068 billion

Grossing $936.7 million in the United States and Canada, and $1.132 billion in the rest of the world, for a total of $2.068 billion worldwide, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is the 17th most expensive movie ever made.

It was also the 24th film in cinema history to gross over one billion dollars worldwide, achieving this feat in just 12 days.

16) The Most Expensive Movies Ever Made - Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Budget: $275 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $297 million

Box office: $393,2 million

Another Star Wars film, Solo: A Star Wars Story, comes in at number 16 with earnings of $213.8 million in the United States and Canada, and $179.4 million in the rest of the world, for a total global revenue of $393.2 million.

With a reported production budget of $275 million, the movie needed to make at least $500 million to be profitable.

A week after its global debut of just $147.5 million, “Variety” magazine reported that the movie would lose Disney “tens of millions of dollars,” while “The Hollywood Reporter” estimated losses ranging from $50 to $80 million.

In response to the film’s poor performance, director Ron Howard wrote on Twitter that he was proud of the film and sorry that more fans did not come to see it.

However, Howard sparked controversy when he blamed the film’s poor performance on “online trolls” who gave it negative publicity.

15) Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Budget: $263 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $297 million

Box office: $873,6 million

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” ranks 15th on the list of the most expensive movies ever made, with a record-breaking opening weekend of $166 million in the United States and Canada, and $422.5 million worldwide.

It was the second-biggest opening ever for a Warner Bros. film.

Despite the impressive opening, the film had a significant 58% decline in its second weekend of release.

The superhero movie earned over $873 million, but it may have needed to be more profitable for studios to consider a franchise continuation.

14) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)

Budget: $225 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $302 million

Box office: $1,066 billion

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” directed by Gore Verbinski, is the 14th most expensive movie ever made.

With a production budget of $225 million, the movie earned over $423 million in the United States and a whopping $642 million worldwide, bringing its total box office earnings to $1.06 billion.

“Dead Man’s Chest” broke numerous records in the United States, including the highest single-day gross ($55.8 million), highest opening weekend gross ($135.6 million), and fastest time to reach the $100, $200, and $300 million marks.

The film’s success can be attributed to its thrilling storyline, impressive special effects, and the performances of its star-studded cast, including Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, and Orlando Bloom.

13) The Most Expensive Movies Ever Made - Avatar (2009)

Budget: $237 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $327 million

Box office: $2,847 billion

James Cameron’s “Avatar,” released in 2009, is the 13th most expensive movie ever made.

The groundbreaking film, which was the first to use 3D technology, had a production budget of $237 million.

The creation of the film’s stunning visual effects, done by WETA, required dozens of hours of editing and graphic processing for each movie frame.

In addition, Cameron and his team created a new language that had to be learned by over 100 actors for the film’s alien characters.

Despite the high cost of production, Avatar was a commercial success, earning over $2.8 billion at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing film of all time.

12) Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Budget: $258 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $337 million

Box office: $894.9 million

“Spider-Man 3,” directed by Sam Raimi, is the most expensive movie in the Spider-Man franchise and the 12th most expensive movie ever made.

The film had over $250 million in the production budget, which was spent on actor salaries, CGI, and marketing and promotion.

Despite mixed reviews, “Spider-Man 3” still managed to earn $894 million at the box office.

The movie’s star-studded cast, including Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco, along with its impressive visual effects, helped draw audiences to theaters.

11) The Most Expensive Movies Ever Made - Titanic (1997)

Budget: $200 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $338 million

Box office: $2,202 billion

“Titanic,” directed by James Cameron, is the 11th most expensive movie ever made.

With a production budget of $200 million ($285 million adjusted for inflation), the film was a massive undertaking that required the construction of a full-scale replica of the doomed ship.

The set, which building costs skyrocketed to a whopping $150 million, was so expensive that the scene where water rushes into the ship had to be filmed in one take.

In addition, the movie’s impressive visual effects, including computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create the sinking of the Titanic, further added to its high production cost.

The film was a commercial and critical success, earning over $2.2 billion at the box office and winning 11 Academy Awards.

10) John Carter (2012)

Budget: $263,7 million (+ $42,9 million in taxes)

Budget adjusted for inflation: $339 million

Box office: $284,1 million

At number 10, with a budget estimated at over $300 million, is “John Carter” (2012).

Unfortunately, the movie showed, if need be, that not every film with a big budget will be a success. According to some estimates, the production lost Disney Studios over $200 million, making it one of the company’s biggest failures.

The enormous production costs were explained by the fact that a large part of the movie had to be re-shot. Thus, for the film to be profitable, it would have had to make at least $600 million in revenue.

This did not happen, and “John Carter” made less than $285 million at the box office.

Rick Ross, former president of Walt Disney studios, resigned a month after the movie was released. At the same time, Disney lost the rights to produce other films from the franchise owned by Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc.

9) The Most Expensive Movies Ever Made - Waterworld (1995)

Budget: $175 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $340 million

Box office: $264,2 million

The post-apocalyptic Sy-Fy movie “Waterworld” is another one of the most expensive movies ever made. The production budget was around 172 million dollars.

The high costs were because the movie was filmed entirely on water. Over 35 million gallons of water were used during the filming, and most shootings were done on a large artificial sea.

The extravagant settings and the crew’s movements were only possible with a significant budget. Unfortunately, the high production costs made it difficult for the movie to generate profit, and it was considered a commercial failure.

The only consolation was the remarkable work of the creators – the floating cities and Mariner’s jet ski – which received recognition from both the public and critics.

8) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2015)

Budget: $250 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $345 million

Box office: $934,5 million

In the 8th place on the list of most expensive films of all time is “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” (2009).

Taking into account the enormous success of the Harry Potter series, it is no wonder that Warner Bros. Studios decided to invest “as much as necessary” to bring the beloved characters back to the big screen.

This movie was the most expensive of the Harry Potter series, with a budget of $250 million.

Part of this substantial budget was spent on innovative filming technologies and techniques, and another part went to the salaries of the actors who had already become huge names in Hollywood.

7) Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Budget: $325 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $351 million

Box office: $2,048 billion

“Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) is ranked 7th in the list of most expensive movies ever made.

With a record-breaking budget for a superhero production, this movie generated over $678 million in the United States and Canada and over $1.3 billion in the rest of the world, for a total box office of $2.048 billion.

However, surprisingly, the net profit of the production was only $500 million, which was due to the exorbitant amounts spent on promotion, which according to estimates, exceeded $750 million.

6) The Most Expensive Movies Ever Made - Tangled (2010)

Budget: $260 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $353 million

Box office: $592,4 million

“Tangled (2010)” is number six on the list of most expensive movies ever made.

Few would have imagined an animated film appearing on a list of the most expensive productions in history, but here it is.

Unfortunately, the colossal budget made available for the film was not used to create a memorable production.

Instead, a large part of the money was used to re-project and reuse sections of the 2000 animated film “Rapunzel,” which never saw the screen’s light. S

Secondly, extraordinary efforts were made to develop CGI technologies that would allow the traditional Disney hand-drawn characters to be animated.

5) Justice League (2017)

Budget: $300 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $362 million

Box office: $657,9 million

The DC Comics production, “Justice League,” is another example of a movie with an enormous budget that failed to impress the audience.

The budget was around 300 million dollars, and despite the high expectations from comic book fans, the movie only made 657 million dollars at the box office.

The reasons behind the film’s failure were various, from production issues to a mismatch between the director’s and the producers’ visions, as well as underdeveloped characters and rushed storytelling.

Although the cast and crew did their best to salvage the film, “Justice League” failed to live up to its hype.

4) Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Budget: $356 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $377 million

Box office: $2,798 billion

“Avengers: Endgame,” produced in 2019, is ranked 4th on the list of the most expensive movies ever made.

This Marvel superhero series film earned a whopping $858.3 million in the United States and Canada, and a staggering $1.939 billion in the rest of the world, making it the third highest-grossing film of all time, behind “Avatar” (2009) and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022).

The opening weekend alone brought in a record-breaking $1.2 billion, shattering the previous record of “Avengers: Infinity War,” which earned a mere $640 million in its opening weekend.

The epic scale of this film, its star-studded cast, and the intricate special effects that brought the superhero story to life, all contributed to its massive budget.

With such an impressive box office return, it’s clear that the investment was well worth it.

3) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

Budget: $300 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $392 million

Box office: $960,9 million

Taking the 3rd place on the list of the most expensive movies ever made is “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

With a budget of a staggering $300 million, this adventure film proved to be a profitable investment, with total earnings of over $960 million.

Released in 2007, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” dominated the box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of that year and the third highest-grossing film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Its high budget was largely attributed to the extensive use of CGI effects, intricate set designs, and the film’s impressive cast, including Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley.

2) The Most Expensive Movies Ever Made - Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Budget: $365 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $417 million

Box office: $1.403 billion

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” is the second installment of the Avengers series, one of the most popular and lucrative Marvel franchises.

The budget for the film was around 365 million dollars, and the movie earned over 1.4 billion dollars worldwide.

The production team spent considerable money on visual effects, sound, and marketing. However, the result was worth the investment, as the film was a massive, critical, and commercial success.

With an intriguing storyline, a great cast, and high-end special effects, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” became one of the most beloved superhero movies of all time.

1) Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

Budget: $379 million

Budget adjusted for inflation: $499 million

Box office: $1.046 billion

The fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, “On Stranger Tides,” is the most expensive movie ever made, with a budget of around 379 million dollars.

The film brought back the much-loved character of Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp. It also introduced new characters, such as the villainous Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane.

Despite mixed reviews, “On Stranger Tides” still earned over 1 billion dollars at the box office worldwide.

Some films featured in my list of the most expensive movies ever made prove that a massive budget only sometimes equates to box office success.

But with the right combination of a gripping storyline, a talented cast, and cutting-edge special effects, it can certainly pay off in a big way.
